The Manse of Iucounu

  1. THE MANSE OF IUCOUNU - A black Ink and Black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "THE EYES OF THE OVERWORLD," by Jack Vance, published by Underwood-Miller in 1977.

When I first thought about abandoning the electronics field to become a full-time freelance illustrator, I realized that with each drawing and each painting I would probably have to create or invent something unusual related to a science fiction or fantasy story, and when I thought about doing it day after day, week after week, year after year, I had some doubts about my ability to be so creative for so long a time.

But then I thought about the years I spent working in the aerospace industry and I realized that most of my days and weeks, and years, were also filled with solving problems, many of them requiring some unique piece of knowledge I did not have. But I searched related documents and books, or I found someone who had the experience or information that I needed to help me solve the problem. In time, the possibility that there could be a problem that I could not solve never entered my mind. Necessity always made me find a way. So I shrugged off the doubts I had and went ahead and did it. And after all, if it turned out that I was not up to it, I could still go out and find a real job again (shudder).-
